DIY disharmony prompts retailer to recruit DIY counsellor role
DIY – ‘do it yourself’ – projects, especially when conducted by couples, create controversy, fuel feuds and deliver dissent but that could soon be history with one retailer creating a DIY relationship counsellor position.
Power tool retailer SGS Engineering is seeking a specialist counsellor specifically to help couples experiencing DIY-induced domestic disharmony.
The position was created following SGS UK-wide research, which found nearly two-thirds of people clash over household projects, particularly redecorating and assembling furniture.
SGS owner Andy Wyatt said in a statement: “Customer satisfaction is crucial to us and trying to power-drill through a barrage of passive-aggressive comments from your spouse is not our idea of satisfaction – that’s where the idea for our DIY relationship counsellor came in.”
The customer support service will be completely free and accessible via various platforms, including a helpline and individual counselling sessions.
As well as giving advice and support on an emotional level, they will also be required to offer practical DIY advice because a lot of arguments stem from a lack of DIY knowledge, including knowing the right tools for the job, Wyatt says.
SGS’s job description states the ideal candidate should:
• have at least two years’ relationship counselling experience
• have a sound knowledge of the DIY industry
• be able to suggest alternative tools to make the project easier and therefore alleviate domestic pressure
• be able to identify when the domestic pressure is at a level where it’s appropriate to call in professional tradesmen to complete the project
Founded in Derby, the company operates across four UK sites, as well as online.
