More than two-thirds of UK recruiters are concerned they will lose business if Britain chooses to leave the European Union.

This is the finding of a survey of more than 2,000 UK recruitment professionals by job site CV-Library, published today. The survey also found 46.6% anticipate fewer positions to apply for due to financial strains amongst organisations following a Brexit vote in the referendum on the UK’s EU membership on 23 June.

The research finds 66.1% believe a possible Brexit will have a negative effect on the UK labour market, with 55.6% believing that it would be particularly harmful to workers.

Just over six in 10 (60.9%) think job cuts at UK firms would be inevitable and more than two-thirds (66.3%) agree there will be increased skills shortages.

Meanwhile, 57.5% warn that a lack of EU workers will drive up recruitment costs, while 40.6% of recruiters say pay rises could also be put on hold post Brexit.

Commenting on the findings, CV-Library founder and managing director Lee Biggins, said: “Whether we stay or go, businesses will need to prioritise investments in robust hiring strategies to ensure they overcome recruitment challenges.

“Britain is an international hub, with many large corporations basing their European headquarters in London. If the nation does decide on a Brexit, employers could face a lack of foreign investment, as well as a huge reduction in available talent, resulting in a major shift in the nation’s job market,” he added.

“While the candidates that obtain the key skills currently in demand should be able to use this to their advantage, businesses facing cuts as a result of leaving the EU may not be able to meet their expectations, particularly when it comes to salaries.”
