Destruction of agency’s display lands Margate man with fine

A man from Margate was advised not to bury his head in the sand after being fined £715 for destroying a window display at a recruitment agency in Kent.
Margate Magistrates' Court heard that Ian Jones, 24, of Hastings Avenue, had gone to HR Go Recruitment in Ramsgate in the hope of getting a job, but became angry when he was told there was no work for him and wrecked the display by punching and kicking it as he left.
Defending solicitor Scott Neilson said Jones had been “out of work for a while” and had lost his temper when staff became dismissive and belittled him.
“If he had paid the damage costs before, he would have received a caution but he was not able to pay the money off, which is why he is now before the court,” he added.
District Judge Gill ordered Jones to pay £400 in compensation and £315 in costs.
“As I am sure you now regret, it would have been much easier if you had paid at the time,” he added.
“It is £715 that you now owe the court. If you fail to pay it, it could get worse. If you do lose your job, phone the court to notify them – do not bury your head in the sand again.”
