MAC considers full impact of EEA migration on the UK

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) is currently assessing the full impact of European Economic Area migration on the UK.
In an interim report released yesterday, MAC revealed its final report, due in September, will draw on its own and external research it has commissioned that considers the impact of EEA migration on wages, unemployment, prices, productivity, training, the provision of public services, public finances, community cohesion and well-being of people in the UK.
Other areas the report looks at will include aligning the UK immigration system with a modern industrial strategy, the fiscal impacts of EEA migration, its effect on skill levels and what lessons can be learned from the experience of other countries.
The report will follow on from yesterday’s interim MAC report, which offered no surprises in terms of concerns employers currently have around accessing European Economic Area talent post-Brexit.
Employers indicated a more restrictive migration policy post-Brexit would restrict growth plans, cause some to relocate, lead some to go out of business and leave large numbers of roles unfilled.
Training UK-born workers was offered up as a solution to the problem but only a long-term one.
