Industry criticises publication of Home Office immigration guidelines

Home Office guidelines published today concerning the UK’s new points-based immigration system has sparked criticism from businesses and the recruitment sector.
Businesses had sought a delay in the publication of guidelines for employers about the immigration system that takes effect next January. However, the Home Office today published a guide for employers, which outlines the new system that will treat EU and non-EU citizens equally and transform the way in which all migrants come to the UK to work.
Under a points-based immigration system, points are assigned for specific skills, qualifications, salaries and shortage occupations. Visas are then awarded to those who gain enough points.
A statement in the guide’s introduction warns: “This represents a significant change for employers in the UK, who will need to adapt.”
Responding to the guidelines’ publication, Tom Hadley, director of policy and campaigns at the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), called for a “temporary immigration route” in light of the Covid-19 crisis.
“Now is not the right time to plough on with immigration reforms. The national effort needs to be focused on eliminating coronavirus, protecting jobs and getting the economy back on track. The country will recover from this pandemic – and ensuring businesses have the skills they need in future will be essential to the recovery. From carers and cleaners to retail workers and drivers, the current crisis is showing us how much we depend on people at all skill levels.
“We need a temporary immigration route meet the needs businesses in every sector of the economy. Post-Brexit and post-virus, this will help businesses succeed and support job and growth here in the UK.”
