Chancellor Sunak announces plan to top-up wages this winter

A new ‘winter economy plan’ announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak today (24 September) provides a top-up of workers’ wages covering up to two-thirds of their hours for the next six months.

To qualify, workers must work at least one-third of their allocated hours.

The Jobs Support Scheme will replace the current furlough scheme, when it ends on 31 October, Sunak said.

The new economy plan also extends the VAT cut to 5% for hospitality and tourism until 31 March 2020.

Reactions already are mixed to the new plan, with recruiters and officials in the hospitality sector saying that it does not go far enough to support that industry.

Tune in to tomorrow’s news bulletin for more details.
