In employment bill ‘Nobody wins unless everybody wins’ says REC’s Mellor

The chair of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) has called for “a [UK] labour market that works for everyone together” as efforts to polish and refine the new Employment Rights Bill pick up steam in Parliament.
“Nobody wins unless everybody wins,” Michelle Mellor (pictured) told members of Parliament, REC leaders and others attending the REC’s reception at the House of Commons last Wednesday [5 February 2025].
Mellor, the owner of a Lancashire recruitment business for 35 years, was urging the audience to ensure that changes to current employment laws must continue to protect workers while promoting businesses’ interests simultaneously.
“Any change to employment legislation must strike a careful balance that enables business to stay competitive while safeguarding rights,” Mellor said. “So, any decision to change employment legislation must be approached with precision and foresight. Thoughtless adjustments risk not only disrupting this delicate balance but also further stagnating the economy.
“In today’s fast-paced, digital and interconnected global world of work, flexibility isn’t just a feature of a modern jobs market; it’s a catalyst for progress and more critical than ever.”
She went on to say: “We must all foster a labour market that works for everyone together, business leaders, policy makers, our labour force and the recruitment professionals who are at the heart of the talent supply chain must ensure we can continue to create a future of shared opportunity and success – and build an economy where workers are valued, businesses thrive and communities prosper.
“Nobody wins unless everyone wins.”
