Lord Sugar bows out as Johnson completes buyout at Hernshead Group

Tom Johnson, co-founder and director of Hernshead Group, has successfully completed a buyout of fellow shareholder and director Lord Sugar.

Taking full ownership of the company, this marks a new chapter for engineering and technology recruitment specialist Hernshead Group.

Founded in 2019, Hernshead Group has grown significantly over the last six years, in part as a result of entrepreneur Lord Sugar’s investment through his private investment business Amvest, which initially was used to hire staff, open a new office and give staff the best technology and IT equipment.

Hernshead Group serves a diverse multinational client base, including companies in additive manufacturing, aerospace & aviation, automotive, automation, special purpose machinery and more, with a turnover now exceeding £3.5m.

Speaking about the future of the company under his leadership, Johnson said: “The support and guidance I’ve received from Lord Sugar and his team has been invaluable throughout the years. He has played a key role in helping shape the business into what it is today. This buyout allows us to take full control of our future and accelerate our growth over the next 5-10 years.”

Johnson told Recruiter that although he couldn’t go into specific financials, “Lord Sugar made a substantial return on his original investment”. He went on to say: “We’re now set to grow further thanks to the strong base we have built, and expand further into Europe and the US, while creating an opportunity for current and future staff to share in the ownership of the business.”

Lord Sugar said: “It has been a pleasure to be a part of Hernshead Group’s journey from its launch. Tom and the team have done a tremendous job in driving the business forward. […] I wish Hernshead Group and the entire team continued success as they move into their next phase of growth.”

The buyout marks a significant milestone for Hernshead Group, with an ambitious 10-year plan to continue expanding its services, talent pool and client relationships to solidify its position as a global leader in recruitment for the engineering and technology sectors.
