Scottish retail boom

The Scottish retail market is performing better than the rest of the UK and recruiters are reaping the rewards.

IT recruiter Parity Resources has been appointed by the Department of Health (DH) and NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency (NHS PASA) to its Commercial Resource Framework.

Parity Resources will provide the DH and NHS organisations with a list of pre-qualified suppliers of non-permanent workers with commercial skills.

The economic upturn will come slowly for recruiters, with employment rates lagging long behind GDP growth.

Investment banking specialist John East & Partners (JEP) has predicted UK employment won’t be buoyed by the initial phase of positive GDP growth, with companies increasing worker efficiency, rather than hiring.

In its trading statement, covering the six months to 30 June 2009, Healthcare Locums says all its divisions are showing consistent month-on-month revenue growth.

As unemployment rises, government plans to help school leavers has led to increased demand for support workers, according to a report from Hays Social Housing.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has warned recruiters and umbrella companies involved in the supply of temporary workers that arrangements know as “Travel and Subsistence Schemes” or Mobile Workers Schemes” are coming under scrutiny because of concerns that some are operating against the law.

A recruiter who racked up £750,000 in debt and kept incomplete financial records has been sentenced to nine months in prison at Reading Crown Court.

Organisations want greater operational efficiency from their HR departments, according to findings from Henley Business School.

The research shows that firms require operational efficiency through slimming down existing processes and policies in line with cutbacks, and finding creative ways of delivering lower cost alternatives that are not too different in quality.

I read with interest the articles you published about non-executive directors in your 22 July issue (News, p10 and Trends, p20). I agree very strongly with Guy Hayward that experience of the recruitment market is not necessarily an essential requirement.

Hospitality needs to do more to develop the skills of lower level workers, according to recruiters.

Professor David Foskett of the Institute of Hospitality told The Mirrorrecently that jobseekers should seek a career in the sector as it offer opportunities for rapid progression and life-long employment.
