International law firm Reed Smith has appointed Lucy Calver as Europe and Middle East (EME) HR director.

Before joining Reed Smith, Calver worked in a number of operational and HR roles in Asda, while her last appointment before joining Reed Smith was group HR director for the financial services company Cattles.

A £1m penalty imposed on multi-sector recruiter Eden Brown for its part in a cartel of construction industry recruitment agencies was “plucked out of the air” and “arbitrary”, a court has heard.

Paul Harris, counsel for Eden Brown, told a Competition Appeal Tribunal in London yesterday that the figure “does not bear any reference to the circumstances of my client”.

Permanent placements rose at their weakest rate for 10 months, according to the latest Report on Jobs from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation and KPMG.
