Amid concerns over online security for business-to-business trading, the UK is to get its first professional institute for IT security and forensic computing staff. The Institute for Communications Arbitration and Forensics (Icaf) will award accreditation to universities offering computer security in IT degrees and dispute resolution. It will also have a register of experts. a


The Welsh Development Agency has established an £11.5 million Technology Exploitation Programme to support small and medium-sized businesses in west Wales and the valleys. Among other initiatives, the agency has earmarked £5 million to support new products, processes and technology.

Companies failing to meet targets in the government’s proposed gas emissions trading scheme are to be severely penalised, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions has warned. Under the scheme, which is set for launch next April, firms that default could be named publicly, face penalties, lose out on financial incentives and face potential suspension or expulsion.

Derbyshire County Council has called on contractors to deliver an ambitious programme of road improvements valued at up to £170 million. The council has asked five firms to compete for a five-year partnering deal where the winner will deliver new road schemes and highways maintenance.


The Welsh Development Agency has published a new Welsh Opto-Electronics Directory. The directory lists manufacturers, suppliers, end-users and researchers in the sector throughout Wales.
