The Adecco Job Watch survey of general staffing roles in the UK has seen an 11.16% drop in such roles advertised month-on-month, nearly exactly cancelling out the vacancies that had been added across the year so far.

Adecco UK managing director Steven Kirkpatrick says: “General staffing has taken a knock over the past month. We believe the reason behind this is something we are hearing quite a lot – that businesses are putting plans on hold for the Olympics, but will be looking to pick up in September when the perceived impact of the Games should have passed.”The recruiter’s previous survey of jobs in May had shown a 1.11% monthly rise in jobs compared to April, with the number of jobs up 11.5% since the year began, as reported by recruiter.co.uk.

Adecco notes that the biggest decline in general staffing has come in the engineering and manufacturing sector at 34.33%, and the only area seeing a rise in vacancies of over 1% was on the temporary side of accountancy at 1.6%.

  • Meanwhile, driving agency Driver Hire says that the Olympics has provided a significant boost to its East London office, having recruited 50 drivers on jobs directly related to the Olympics, including to Japanese and Brazilian broadcasters and the Canadian Olympic Committee. The head of the East London office Richard Pugh says it is “also picking up a lot of extra work from food and drink companies, car deliveries and those in the waste disposal business directly as a result of the Olympics”.
