UK graduate employment is increasing steadily, with graduate level jobs at a record high, according to the Higher Education Careers Services Unit’s (HECSU’s) annual ‘What Do Graduates Do?’ report.
Just under 70% of graduates from the class of 2010 are employed, an increase of 8% from 2009, of which a record number – just over 100,000 or 63% of the total – got ‘graduate level’ roles, a 9% increase on last year.
Marketing, sales and advertising was the sector in most growth, with 31% more new graduates entering roles in this area than the previous year.
The City also showed recovery, with 7.5% of graduates entering financial and banking services, the same number as in 2008.
While medical and teaching roles for graduates have experienced on major decline, the proportion of graduates, working in non-technical roles in local government, public administration and defence was down by 15%.
Salaries, however, remained flat, with the highest increase in average salary being reported in Scotland, up by just £335.
