Job site Monster.co.uk has pledged that it will not allow the advertisement of unpaid internships on its website.

This follows a recently-announced investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) into 100 companies believed to be breaking the law through their use of unpaid interns. Earlier this year, former cabinet minister Hazel Blears tabled a bill – ultimately unsuccessful – looking to make the advertising of unpaid internships illegal.

Andrew Sumner, Monster’s managing director, UK & Ireland, says: “A healthy future economy relies on the investment businesses make in young people and we believe it’s important not to take advantage of those desperate to get a foot on the career ladder.”

Blears has congratulated Monster on their stance, adding: “It is time we all took action to stop this exploitation and I would urge other companies and organisations to follow Monster's lead.”
