The BBC has spent more than £650k on recruitment consultants in the last year and boosted its overall staff numbers in the period by an additional 300, despite promises in 2011 that it would cut 2,000 jobs by 2017.

The latest figures from the corporation include permanent staff and those on fixed-term and flexible contracts and were obtained by Freedom of Information request made and published by the Guardian newspaper.

The BBC said it sometimes uses external recruitment consultants to obtain high-quality candidates or applicants for specialised roles.
