Fri, 8 Aug 2014A Carnforth, Cumbria youth who had a four-week placement with Ulverston-based defence, aerospace, rail and telecommunications engineering firm Oxley, is the UK finalist for global recruiter Adecco Group’s ‘CEO for one month’ competition.

One of 10 finalists shortlisted from around the world, Adam Boardman, 17, could find himself working alongside chief executive officer Patrick De Maeseneire at the helm of the world’s largest staffing company.

Mel Harvey, human resources at Oxley, tells recruiter.co.uk: “Under 24-year-olds can’t get a job because they don’t have the experience. It’s a vicious circle. Schemes like this are brilliant to solve that problem. Adam is a very astute person for a 17-year-old. He has a five-year plan. We are very proud of him getting through and we’re backing him to win.”

The final testing phase for the 10 candidates will be a ‘Boot Camp’ from 12-16 August in Zurich at which they will face a series of interviews, business assignments and challenges to test their suitability for the role, in which they will be mentored by De Maeseneire.

Youngsters applied to the competition via the Adecco Experience, which placed 88 young people in internships in some of the world’s leading companies. Forty-six participants from Adecco Experience went on to put themselves forward to be ‘CEO for one month’ and applications were judged on performance in these roles, the host companies’ evaluation and the way they shared their experience through social media.

Follow their progress by using the Twitter hashtag #CEO1month and through the account @AdeccoWayToWork.

Adecco is running the competition in response to concerns about young people’s employment prospects.
