Wed, 17 Sep 2014China technology giant Huawei plans to double the number of research and development (R&D) staff based in Europe over the next three years.
The third-largest smartphone maker by sales has 140,000 employees worldwide and R&D centres in Europe, Silicon Valley in the US and elsewhere. It said it expects to employ 13,000 people across Europe by 2017.
The company’s French subsidiary said at least 200 of the new staff, including mathematicians and designers, will be based in France.
The move, however, will raise eyebrows among US officials, which have long seen the Chinese manufacturer as a security threat because of its close links to the Beijing government.
The company, based in the southern city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, says it serves 45 of the world's 50 biggest telecoms carriers and said its equipment is used in 110 of 244 commercial fourth-generation (4G) mobile phone networks worldwide.
