Recruitment agencies in Wales are excited by the boost in jobs and industry expected to follow the Nato Summit, which has kicked off in Newport, South Wales.
While the city, which normally plays second fiddle to Cardiff, hosts more than 60 heads of state in the salubrious surroundings of the Celtic Manor Resort, recruiters in Wales are already discussing the event’s legacy.
Ruth Dalton, head of communications at Cardiff-based recruiter New Directions, said it will showcase the strength of the Welsh hospitality sector.
She told Recruiter: “I think the exposure the country has by having the summit here is wonderful. Cardiff is absolutely awash with customer service and welcome for the summit. There’s a buzz about the place. I think for somewhere like Wales, which is seen as quite a neutral country, this is a real big coup.”
She added: “We talk about the warm Welsh welcome. The service industries will benefit. Customer service is a hot topic within our recruitment team. The Welsh get it right.”
The Celtic Manor Resort has 800 staff working the event, relying on its 750—strong permanent workforce and its pool of 200 casual workers who work on an as needed basis. A spokesperson told Recruiter that all employees had to be vetted before the event. He said: “It hasn’t had an massive impact on recruitment because obviously we are accustomed to holding major events.
“The event organisers themselves have brought in a lot of additional contractors.”
Dan Langford, group marketing director at Acorn Recruitment, which has offices in Newport, told Recruiter: “If the region can support the scale of activity required to put on an event like this then there something fairly significant about that. The hope would be that the increased profile will help support a lot of the direct activity that [recruitment] agencies do to promote the area as a place to invest and locate businesses in.”
