Employment in New Zealand is expected to grow by 2.5% between 2015 and 2016, 1.9% 2016-17, and 1.6% 2017-18, according to the country’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Strong employment growth is expected in the construction and utility industries, along with the hospitality sector, wholesale & retail trade and business services.

Employment growth in highly skilled occupations, mostly managers and professionals, is expected to account for more than 58% of the overall employment growth.

Opportunities for lower-skilled workers are forecast to account for about 28% of overall employment growth, with the food processing, retail, accommodation, business services and construction industries expected to create most of the opportunities.

The share of employment growth is expected to be strongest in the Auckland, Canterbury, Waikato and Otago/Southland regions, which will account for nearly two-thirds of the overall growth during the three years.

The figures, contained in the ministry’s ‘Short-term Employment Forecasts: 2015-2018’ report, is intended to inform its advice relating to immigration priorities, and priority setting for tertiary education and industry training over the next 2-3 years.
