Chancellor’s £4bn+ jobs package predicted in Spending Review

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is today expected to reveal a £2.9bn scheme to help a million people with job searches plus a further £1.4bn to bolster Jobcentre Plus’s capacity when he announces the government’s spending plans for the coming year.
Reported last night (24 November) by the UK’s major news outlets, the total £4.3bn jobs support package in the Spending Review reflects government concerns that unemployment could continue rising until next summer.
The chancellor is also expected to extend the apprenticeship hiring incentive, which pays employers £2k for every new apprentice they hire to the end of March, along with confirming a £375m package to support skills by offering people training to change career.
He is expected to promise to “create and support” hundreds of thousands of jobs through billions of pounds investment in infrastructure, such as roads, houses, railways and cycle lanes.
The Restart scheme aimed at helping people with their job searches will provide bespoke support to fit individual circumstances, it is anticipated.
Sunak is expected to begin speaking at 12.30pm today.
