Activity in the construction sector hit a three-month high in January.

The latest seasonally adjusted CIPS/Markit UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index increased from 29.3 index points in December, to 34.5 in January. However, the survey still warned the figure pointed to a “substantial” monthly contraction.  

While I welcome many of Kevin Green’s ideas for the future of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (Recruiter, 14 January), a number of them concern me.

A director of failed executive recruiter Ellis Fairbank, which went into administration last October, has spoken of his personal anguish after efforts to revive the company proved unsuccessful.

EU leaders want  hedge funds be more tightly regulated because they argue they  played a part  in causing the credit crunch.

Software solutions firm Oxford Software and payroll provider Zeel Solutions have entered into a new agreement.

The agreement means that Oxford Software’s pay and bill solution Tempaid will be integrated into Zeel Solution’sZtravelex – its purpose-built recruitment travel and subsistence solution.

The service is available as a ‘bolt-on’ to current Tempaid users.

Career choice is the key driver behind graduates wanting to enter retail, retail recruiters say.

The Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo) has written to Pat McFadden, the minister for employment relations, criticising the government department’s ‘Know your rights campaign’ for agency workers.

In the letter, Ann Swain, APSCo’s chief executive, argues that  the leaflet promotes and encourages stereotyping of agency workers. 

US retained executive search firm DavenportMajor has been selected for three searches.

First is the senior vice president of technology for consumer electronics company SkinIt. Secondly, the newly created role of infection prevention medical advisor for technology firm 3M. And finally, vice president of quality assurance for medical devices manufacturer Volcano Corporation.

Two US-based executive search firms have announced successful placements.

US retained executive search firm Halbrecht Lieberman Associates has completed a search for a vice president of infrastructure services for the Ingram Book Group in Nashville, Tennessee. The selected candidate is Michael Jones, a managing consultant in Atlanta.
