The government has announced that the maximum compensation award for unfair dismissal is to increase by 5.1% in February next year.

According to employment lawyer EMW Picton Howell, the recession will mean that the number of compensation pay outs will inevitably increase.

US business magazine Forbes suggests that workers made redundant who leave with a healthy package should either save their money or take a holiday.

“Cancel the cable [extended TV service] and start reading career guides. Or you can book a flight to the Philippines and live like a king for six months,” the magazine says.

Despite the government’s historic bailouts and an eye-watering fiscal stimulus, one recruiter remains positive about a whole raft of opportunities in the public sector next year.

David Pyle, spokesman for Synergy Group, which has added a candidate training service to its offering, says the company still expects to grow by 10% next year and by the same amount in 2010.
