Staffing companies Adecco and Adecco Outsourcing are expecting to offer 125,000 extra contract roles this summer in Spain, an increase of 15% on the level seen throughout the rest of the year.

This is an increase of 5% on the previous year, but the major boosts will come in the Balearic and Canary Islands, where there will be 20% more work than in the previous year.

Meanwhile, many of the mainland regions of Spain will see little increase in overall levels of summer jobs available.

This news comes the same day that hotel chain Melia Hotels International announced it was due to start its recruitment for up to 280 jobs at a new hotel and entertainment centre on the island of Mallorca.

The resort’s managing director Carlos Gomez says that all recruits would need a good level of English, and preferably German or Russian as well.

Adecco believes that with 5m unemployed people in the country, such opportunities for summer jobs are likely to be of interest to groups beyond just the regular student population who have their summer free.
